Exchange Visitors
Exchange visitors may apply for J nonimmigrant status. The J visa category is very broad. It includes nannies, teachers, scholars, doctors, students, etc. Generally speaking, a sponsorship program administers the exchange program. Many times students may be eligible for both J nonimmigrant status and F nonimmigrant status. There are advantages to J status—namely, the family members of a J nonimmigrant visa holder may work in the United States. However, there are also disadvantages, which may include having to spend two years outside the United States after the completion of their program.
